A map, a backpack, and travel companions...

You know who you want to be and what you want to accomplish.  Here's the real task - How do you get there?  It's not enough to know what your destination is.  Yes, it is necessary to know where you are going, but you will never arrive without a map, your backpack, and good traveling companions.  And your map is your own.  This is not a one size fits all kind of thing.  Your destination looks different than mine, so you map should also look different.  We may have some things that match, but the should not be identical.

One of the hardest parts is that we have to make our own map to success, and sometimes other people get to add the detours.  The most important piece is that you create your map.  You may find that you need to add some new roadways as you go and change the path a little.  It is ok to have to redirect to reach your goals.

How do you create your map?  And what goes in the backpack?  Who are these travel companions?

My map:
My vision.  My map needs to have a visual component.  This is what my vision boards are for.  In my office my board is words.  I like having ones with pictures best, but I have currently settled for the words of what I want to achieve.
When creating my map, I make a list of what I want to accomplish both short term and long term in a notebook.  I evaluate this list multiple times throughout the year.  My goals each have a page of their own with the steps I think may be necessary to reach them.  This gives me a plan to check off and see if I am making progress towards my goals.

My Backpack:
My map.  The written version that is and a picture in my phone of one of my boards.  It is important to keep your goals in front of you.  Keep your eyes on the prize as they say.
Books.  Reading is an important growth item for me to continue to improve personally and professionally.  I usually have a book or three in my backpack at a time.
Journal.  I like to have pen and paper ready for the thoughts I think.  Sometimes they are profound and other times well...  Let's just say you don't ready some of them.

My Companions:
The people in my life are there by design and by choice.  I am a firm believer in having quality people in your life rather than just quantity.  My travel companions are people who help me to be the best me I can be.  They believe in me and challenge me.  Some of them are further in their journey than I and others are just starting theirs.  We need to have all kinds of people in our lives.  Surround yourself with people that will help build you up and that you can do the same for.

I no longer proceed on my journey without these things.  I need to have a plan to get there, the tools that will help me succeed and the people who will pick up up when I fall and cheer me on.
